In its regional premiere, more than 700 original objects are shown in the first traveling exhibition about the Auschwitz concentration camps. Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. is coming to The Castle at Park Plaza on March 15, 2024.

Through this daunting selection of objects from the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland, as well as more than 20 institutions and museums all over the world, this exhibition portrays the complex reality of the notorious camp while sharing first-hand stories from those who survived, and those who perished.

These remarkable artifacts range from:
  • Concrete posts that were part of the fence of the Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp
  • Fragments of an original prisoners’ barrack from the Auschwitz III-Monowitz camp
  • A gas mask used by the concentration camp officers
  • Personal items like shoes, clothing, children’s dolls, eyeglasses, and suitcases

When guests enter the Auschwitz exhibition, they will confront one of history’s darkest periods… but they will also be a part of an ongoing remembrance and will leave bearing the weight of society’s responsibility to combat hate and evil everywhere.

The Boston engagement of this exhibition is produced by Musealia in partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and in collaboration with the Cincinnati Museum Center.

Duration

Time inside the exhibition varies by person. Many take 1.5 to 2 hours to take in the content fully, however, there is no time limit once you have entered.

Which day is the best to visit the exhibition?

The exhibition is generally the least busy on weekday afternoons. If you’re interested in seeing this exhibit with fewer guests in the galleries, we recommend visiting then.

Are guided visits available?

Tickets to the exhibition include a complimentary audio guide compliments of WCVB Channel 5 Boston. The are no docent tours of this exhibition.

Is the exhibition suitable for children?

We generally recommend this exhibit for visitors aged 12 and up. However, we ultimately allow parents and guardians decide if their child is mature enough for this exhibition and its content. Our exhibition is professionally curated to provide a thought-provoking and educational experience. Our aim is to foster an environment where visitors can engage with the content in a manner that aligns with their individual comfort levels and understanding.

How long will the exhibition stay in Boston?

The exhibition is open from March 2024 for a limited time before visiting other cities around the world.

I want to go with some friends or relatives. Do I need to make a reservation?

To ensure your preferred date and time, pre-purchased tickets are highly recommended.

Can I take photos when visiting the exhibition?

You can use your phone or camera to take pictures, but flash, tripods, selfie sticks, or any other devices that can disturb the other visitors’ movements or vision are not allowed. If you do take photos, remember to make sure your photos respect the memory of the victims. Share your experience on social media with the exhibition hashtag #notlongagonotfarway.

If it is deemed necessary for the proper operation of the exhibition or the optimal preservation of the exhibits, taking pictures may be temporarily forbidden.

Are the premises adapted to people with impaired mobility?

The venue is wheelchair accessible. The accessible entrance is past the main entrance and up the alley between the venue and the restaurant “Basile”. Staff will be stationed at this entrance to greet guests and direct them to the ticketing desk and entry queue.

I have a hearing impairment. How can I visit the exhibition without the audio guide?

In addition to the audio guide (available in both English and Spanish), we can provide a text-based version of the guide. All displays and objects throughout the exhibit have individual descriptions, and all videos are subtitled.

You can buy tickets on Ticketmaster, our only official ticketing partner.

How do I reschedule my tickets?

When should I arrive at the venue?

We recommend that all guests arrive at the venue at least 10 minutes prior to the time stated on their ticket. Due to the high volume of visitors to the exhibition, immediate access to the galleries is not guaranteed and guests should expect to queue briefly before entering the exhibition.

Can I get my money back if I am unable to come on the date?

There are no refunds and no cancellations except as expressly outlined in this ticket exchange policy. The deadline for all exchanges is 24 hours before the date and time on the original ticket. To request a refund or exchange, please email Ticketmaster Customer Service.

Do you offer free tickets to Support Persons?

Patrons supporting persons with disabilities receive free admission to the exhibit and do not require an entry ticket. At no time will a patron with a disability who is accompanied by a support person be prevented from having access to their support person while on the exhibit premises.

Do you offer group tickets?

A group discount is available for groups of 10 or more. Please visit our group ticket page to submit your group booking request.

What personal items can I bring inside?

We encourage you to leave valuables, large bags, and other personal belongings at home. For the safety of our visitors and the collection, all bags entering or leaving the exhibit, including purses, are subject to inspection.

Backpacks, suitcases, and duffle bags are not permitted in the exhibit.

Can I use seating or mobility aids inside?

Wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters are all permitted.

Are service animals allowed?

Service animals are permitted, but please be advised that the volume and visuals may be uncomfortable for animals. For non-traditional service animals please contact us in advance.

Can I bring a stroller?

Strollers are permitted within the premises; however, to ensure the safety and comfort of all guests, we kindly ask that they not be brought into the gallery area.

Please consider parking your strollers at the designated area near the self-serve coat check before exploring the exhibition. Our staff will be happy to assist you in finding the appropriate spot for your stroller.

Does the venue offer a coat check service?

The venue will offer an area where guests can hang large coats at no charge. Note that this area will not be continually monitored and guests leave personal items behind at their own risk.

Are masks required?

Masks are not required for entry to the exhibit. We encourage all patrons to follow safety recommendations such as social distancing, frequent hand washing, and staying at home if they are not feeling well.

Are the bathrooms at the venue?

There are two restroom areas in the venue. The main restroom is accessed via a staircase and is located on the basement level of the building.

ADA-accessible restrooms are located on the main level outside of the gallery space. Signs will be placed throughout the venue with directions to the restrooms and staff will be available to guide guests.

It is strongly recommended that guests use the restrooms BEFORE they enter the queue in the galleries.

Is parking available?

There is no on-site parking available.

The closest public parking lot is behind the venue at 109 Arlington Street (Laz Parking). There is a parking garage at 200 Stuart Street and 155 Columbus Avenue.

There is also limited metered street parking in the vicinity of the venue.

What items are prohibited in the exhibition?

  • Backpacks, suitcases, and duffle bags are not permitted in the exhibit.
  • Weapons of any kind, including firearms, mace, pepper spray, knives, sharp objects, bats, clubs, tasers, etc.
  • Outside food or beverage (Water bottles with sealable caps are permissible) (Exceptions will be made for those with medical requirements and/or special needs.
  • Professional camera equipment (e.g., monopods; bipods; tripods; selfie-sticks, etc.).
  • Laser pointers or flashlights.
  • Illegal drugs/alcoholic substances (current prescription medication in the original container is permitted, provided the guest produces identification matching the prescription container).
  • Cans (including aerosols), bottles, boxed liquids, metal, glass, or other insulated containers.
  • Pets, other than service animals.
  • Signs, posters, or garments with offensive language, phrasing, or symbols.
  • Noisemakers, air horns, bells, bull horns, whistles, etc.
